Targeting of innocents agitates Lok Sabha members again
Incidents of lynching by cow vigilantes and targeting of innocents over rumours of child-lifting agitated the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, with Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge demanding an inquiry into these crimes by a sitting Supreme Court judge.
This comes in the wake of the latest lynching of Rakbar Khan in Alwar and the constitution of a high-level committee under the Union Home Secretary and a Group of Ministers to look into it and make recommendations.
‘Panel not enough’
Mr. Kharge — who rushed into the well of the House with some Congress members before he was asked to speak — said concern was being shown over the spate of lynchings but the situation persisted, with one incident after another being reported. “Instead of just a committee or a GoM, a sitting Supreme Court judge should inquire into these,” he said during Zero Hour.
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan told Opposition members that Home Minister Rajnath Singh had spoken on the issue the previous evening and the same subject should not be raked up. Mr. Singh pointed out that a high-level committee and a Group of Ministers had been announced to submit a report. “We will take whatever steps need to be taken,” he said.
