Students present cultural programmes; Andhra delicacies are a special attraction
With captivating folk and traditional performances the festival spirit pervaded ‘Sankranti Sambaralu’ organised by the district administration on Saturday. Display of Andhra delicacies like ‘ariselu,’ ‘jantikalu’ and ‘pokundalu’ added the culinary attraction. Students presented cultural programmes.
The celebration at the Children’s Arena at Siripuram in the morning was organised by ICDS involving self-help groups. District Collector Pravin Kumar pepped up the spirits by shaking a leg with the Dhimsa dancers and participating in the ‘kolatam’ dance and ‘chekkabhajana.’
He arrived at the venue decorated with ‘rangolis’ in the Andhra ‘panchekattu’ and after stirring the ‘pongali’ lit the bonfire ‘Bhogimantalu.’ He tasted some sweets.
A rousing performance by ‘tappetagullu,’ the songs of ‘haridasulu’ and ‘gangireddulu’ with the decorated bulls added the rural touch to the festival in the heart of the city.
ZP Chairperson Lalam Bhavani described the importance of the harvest festival and its significance with regard to the sun’s entry into the ‘Makararasi.’Extending his Sankranti greetings, Mr. Pravin Kumar expressed happiness at participating in the celebration.
With the Chief Minister announcing the doubling of the welfare pensions, they would be credited to the accounts of the beneficiaries, he said. Vehicles to the differently-abled and ‘Sankranti kanuka’ hampers were given away.
Prizes to winners in the essay-writing and elocution competitions were presented.
Joint Collector-Two A.Siri, ICDS Project Director Sunanda, DEO Lingeswara Reddy, Tourism Regional Director D. Radhakrishna Murthy Information Department Regional Joint Director Bala Gangadhara Tilak participated.
At Lendi College, students displayed ‘rangoli’ and ‘gobbemmalu,’ prepared the traditional ‘pongali’ and flew kites at Lendi Institute of Engineering and Technology at Jonnada on Saturday.
A traditional fashion show was also held in the celebration organised by Femina wing.
Chairman P. Madusudhana Rao, Vice-Chairman P. Srinivasa Rao, secretary and correspondent K. Sivaramakrishna, Principal V.V. Rama Reddy and Femina president P. Tirumala addressed the students.
