25-day Omalloor vayal-vanibhom on in three venues
The annual agriculture fair, Omalloor vayal-vanibhom, organised by the local grama panchayat, began at the panchayat auditorium, vegetable market, and at the paddy fields at Omalloor, near here, on Friday.
Catholicate College Principal Mathew P. Joseph formally inaugurated the 25-day annual agriculture fair at a function at the grama panchayat auditorium in the forenoon.
Panchayat president Geetha Vijayan presided over the inaugural function.
A cultural meet and procession were held in the afternoon.
Renowned Padayani exponent and former vice-chairman of the Kerala Folklore Akademi Kadammanitta Vasudevan Pillai inaugurated the cultural meet.
Mr. Pillai said the local body could do a lot in reviving the lost glory of the ‘vayal-vanibhom.’
A seminar on agriculture was held on the first day.
The agriculture fair has been an annual attraction to the farming community in the region, especially to those residing in the hill tracts of the district.
People from neighbouring districts and border villages of Tamil Nadu used to visit Omalloor for purchasing agricultural implements and farm produces in olden days. Peasants used to barter agriculture produce and cattle at the fair.
The local body’s efforts to enliven the rustic fair had a fruitful impact over the past one decade.
Besides the exhibition-cum-sale of agriculture produces and cattle, the local body also organises seminars and cultural programmes as part of the annual fair.
A seminar on animal husbandry and a workshop on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme will be held on Saturday.
District Collector P.B. Noohu will inaugurate the seminar in the forenoon.
