Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge to boycott Lokpal meet today, tells PM Modi opposition can’t be ‘voiceless’

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has targeted the government over non-appointment of Lokpal over the last five years. Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that the government has used his refusal to attend the meeting for selection of a Lokpal as “an excuse”.

Kharge has said that he would skip the meeting of the Lokpal selection panel. He had been invited by the government to attend the selection panel meeting as a “special invitee”. The Congress leader has refused to attend the meeting of the selection panel as a “special invitee” on several occasions in the past as well.

He hit out at the Modi government for not amending the law to facilitate participation of the opposition in the Lokpal’s selection process. He said, “Since 2014, the government has not made any attempt to amend the relevant provisions of the Lokpal Act to include the Leader of the Single Largest Party in the Opposition to be a member of the Selection Committee.”
