Commuters to enjoy Wi-Fi facility at 47 more railway stations

Railway sources say infrastructure work is complete at 37 stations

More railway stations in Tiruchi Division are being provided with high speed Wi-Fi facility to enable passengers access the internet free of cost for a limited time duration while travelling.

Confined to five major stations at present witnessing more footfalls every day, the service is now being extended to 47 more stations falling under different categories in the division.

The list of stations where the facility will be extended includes Srirangam, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Tiruchi Fort, Vriddhachalam, Vellore Cantonment, Tiruvarur, Sirkazhi, Nannilam, Tiruppadiripuliyur, Tiruvannamalai, Nidamangalam, Panruti, Pennadem, Budalur, Karaikal and Pullambadi.

RailTel Corporation, a ‘Mini Ratna’ public sector undertaking also involved in modernisation of train operations and administration network systems has been entrusted with the task of providing Wi-Fi facility at these stations.

Railway sources said necessary infrastructure works relating to putting in place the latest facility has been completed in 37 stations till now including Tiruchi Fort, Tiruvannamalai, Neyveli, Srirangam, Chidambaram, Sirkazhi, Nannilam, Peralam, Kallakudi Palanganatham, Tiruchi Town, Lalgudi, Vellore Cantonment, Tirukkovilur, Saliyamangalam, Aduturai and Arni Road.

The facility was implemented in five stations : Tiruchi Junction, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Puducherry and Villupuram – all of which are category ‘A’ station .

The extension of the facility was aimed at enhancing passenger amenities.

The railway administration has planned to put in place the facility by this month-end at these stations, said an official.

The duration for using the service free of cost at the station is 30 minutes after which the passengers would be charged for further usage.

The proposed plan of the Southern Railway was to cover in the next few months the remaining stations in Tiruchi Division which carried 35.1 million passengers during the current 2018-19 fiscal up to January 2019.

This figure was 12.5% higher than the previous year when the division carried 31.2 million passengers, sources said.

The cumulative passenger earnings stood at ₹283.09 crore clocking a 11 % rise than the previous year’s earnings which was ₹ 255.02 crore.

As part of passenger-related amenities measure, help desks have been set up at all major stations in Tiruchi Division to demonstrate / download the UTS on Mobile APP for the convenience of travelling public and with a view to promoting paperless ticket.
