The city police on Sunday arrested three persons with alleged possession of banned tobacco products worth over Rs. 1 crore.
The police identified the accused as Shyju of Pravachambalam, Asqar and Rafeeq of Kallattumukku. While chewing tobacco products worth Rs. 80 lakh were confiscated from Shyju’s rented house in Venganoor, the products worth Rs. 25 lakh were seized from the houses of the other accused.
They were apprehended by the city Shadow police, following which their arrests were recorded by the Vizhinjam and Fort police.
According to the police officers, the gang used to supply the banned products in large quantities in various parts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam after smuggling them in lorries from Tamil Nadu.
Several school students were found to have been purchasing tobacco products from the gang.
The houses were raided on the basis of the information that were purportedly divulged by those arrested, the police said.
