Slow down the pace of the game and then shoot a basket – this was the strategy of Sardar Dastur School girls team in the last two quarters which clicked and helped them to clinch the Sanjay Mahadeo Nimhan Memorial under-16 district basketball championship title defeating Deccan Gymkhana A-team 66-59.
In the action-packed match on Sunday at Deccan Gymkhana – both the teams were going neck to neck till 33rd minute before Sardar Dastur came out with their ace game to oust home team Deccan Gymkhana.
“Defence was not playing well in the start but the change in strategy in the second half helped our team to pull back,” said Lalit Nahata, coach, Sardar Dastur School.
For Deccan Gymkhana, things looked in control with Saanvi Gholap and Siya Khilare kept scoring baskets in tandem. The duo scored 38 points between them.
Till the third quarter, Deccan Gymkhana was leading with four points but a flurry of fouls and missing few baskets allowed Sardar Dastur School to come back.
“Two of our players made five fouls and both of them could not play in final moments of the game which costed us. Both the teams were well balanced but our team just couldn’t finish off well and it made the difference,” said Kajal Ambedkar, coach, Deccan Gymkhana A-team.
For Sardar Dastur girls, Tanvi Salve was the top scorer with 33 points while Sanika Kirad added 15 points.
“They were playing with fast break strategy and in the earlier part of the game we were not able to control them but in the later part our defence played well and it helped us to score comeback win,” said Tanvi Salve
“Defence was not doing good in the second half and there was little confusion in our strategy but we soon sorted it out and played accordingly,” added Salve.
