Brij Katyal had Neena Gupta by his side during the last days of his battle with cancer

Veteran writer Brij Katyal lost his battle with cancer on Thursday. He breathed his last at the Shanti Avedana Ashram in Bandra. Sharing the news, writer-director-media strategist and a close associate, Anusha Srinivasan Iyer told IANS, “Brijji was all of sixteen even as an octogenarian. His energy was infectious. I took my baby steps into writing assisting him in penning his scripts… He was always wanting me to direct, finding producers for me. When my short film ‘Saare Sapne Apne Hain’ travelled to 53 festivals, he was happier than me.”

Katyal also wrote the story of many TV serials including Dillagi and Saans which was directed by Neena Gupta. Renu Sharan, one of the producers who worked with Katyal, said, “He wrote many scripts for us, the first being Dillagi. His characters were very real.” Neena Gupta was one of the very few who were by his side in his last few days. Just last week, Neena had shared a heartfelt post on Instagram. Sitting by his bedside, Neena wrote, “A free of charge hospic called shanti avedna sadan at mountmary thank u for looking after my writer friend brij katyal who wrote saaans for me .a beautiful human being but see inspite of seeing so many movies and listening to wise words that don t give everything away to anyone before u die we do the same mistakes and then suffer . Lecture nahin hai samne ki sachchai hai,” [sic]

May his soul rest in peace.
